One decision can change everything—Shift explores how life’s unexpected turns redefine us.
Thomas Styles’ Shift is a heartfelt and gripping story that blends family drama, suspense, and a touch of the mysterious to an exploration of the transformative power of life’s twists and turns. Centered on Eric Long, a widowed father of three, the novel captures his struggle to navigate grief, parenthood, and a life-altering encounter that forces him—and his family—to confront change in all its forms.
Shift hooked me immediately: a seemingly simple act of kindness (helping a turtle cross the road) escalates into a life-threatening encounter. From this point, the novel examines how even small decisions ripple outward in unforeseen ways. Eric and his boys’ encounter with a mysterious stranger catalyzes a deeper exploration of transformation, resilience, and human connection. I found myself deeply absorbed in their story and have been thinking about it ever since.
Styles’ writing shines in its authentic portrayal of family dynamics. Eric’s relationship with his sons is tender yet complicated. There are moments of raw emotion that feel deeply real and relatable. Their story and the evolution of their relationships really tugged at my heartstrings.
The only notes I would offer Styles would be that some scenes feel overexplained while others beg for more depth. I would like more clarity around the mysterious figure of Martin, who, while intriguing, left me a little muddled as to his role.
Despite these minor critiques, Shift is definitely a worthwhile read that had me pondering how we adapt to life’s uncertainty. Styles’ ability to weave humor, tension, and heartfelt emotion into the narrative makes this a memorable journey.
I’d recommend Shift to readers who enjoy family-focused dramas with elements of suspense, such as fans of Fredrik Backman or Jodi Picoult. If you’re drawn to stories that challenge characters to grow through hardship while celebrating the strength of familial bonds, this book is well worth your time.
